Letter: Stray - Landscaping and a water feature?

It is good to see that the Harrogate Advertiser has responded to the opinions of its conservative clientele and the self interest of the Stray Defence Association.

Recognising that readership of the written press is an ever shrinking demographic, the Advertiser should have been cautious in its stance. Harrogate Borough Council too should have been brave in standing up for the wishes of the rest of the population, even if not expressed in such vociferous manner.

The Stray certainly needs protecting as an open space for community use, but could benefit from significant upgrade. It is essentially dull and featureless, apart from the two days per year when the cherry trees blossom.

What about some landscaping, a water feature and a small wildlife sanctuary for a start?

The football pitches would benefit from serious investment in the drainage systems to extend the playing season. Recreational facilities for children and youths would not go amiss.

The Tour de France Grand Depart is the single biggest event in the history of Harrogate and should be a used as a model for future events.

Can we sustain ourselves in the 21st century with a long overspent history of spa treatments, Agatha Christie and the prospect of a Fat Rascal?
