Letter: Heritage - Tories showed a lack of vision

I was very disappointed in the response by the Conservative Group to my move at the last council meeting to try and preserve part of our local heritage by retaining the centre part of the Council Offices with its wonderful staircase and Council Chamber, leaving the wings for development.

What surprised me was their lack of vision at what the commercial benefits could be in having this kind of space on offer for the Conference Centre business, weddings, local events etc and a place to display our civic history.

We would have not been the first council to look at this. York have actually done it with the Guildhall.

There was mention of loss of capital and how that would undermine the business plan for the new Council Offices. With capital receipts looking healthier now than when the business plan was put together, I certainly feel that there was an opportunity to re-look at this issue as the council re-markets Crescent Gardens.
