Editor's comment: Real problems that need looking into

There truly are some bone-shaking, car-juddering shockers.

Residents at the time of the Tour De France used to joke they hoped the race would be passing close to their homes because they might get their roads repaired.

This week, North Yorkshire County Council has been awarded £1.6million of government funding to help fix the potholes on its 9,000km road network.

For the largest county in the country, this paltry amount is just a drop in the ocean.

The government has a £250m Pothole Action Fund, but they would gain much popularity by at least tripling that sum to fix the embarrassing state of the nation’s roads.

There may be an important EU referendum on the horizon, and many other matters of national and international importance to take up government time. But politicians who are really engaged with their electorate will know that most of us are far more interested - and infuriated - about the dreadful state of our roads, and what is going to be done about them.
