William & Vic’s new look is looking good

The refurbishment seems to be over, unless my own eyes deceived me, and Harrogate’s legendary William & Vic restaurant/wine bar has quietly reopened in style, certainly downstairs at least, if the happy-looking diners I spied enjoying meals last night are anything to go by.

One of Harrogate’s most popular dining establishments originally opened in the 1970s as the town’s very first wine bar, but has been closed for a month for its biggest shake-up since then.

But downstairs at its roadside location on Cold Bath Road looks just as inviting as ever, perhaps even more so, if a little lighter in tone.

The aim of owners David and Johanna Straker during refurbishment has been to retain this ambience while giving W&V an extra freshness..

Co-owner Johanna Straker said: “We want to create a better flow and buzz between the two floors but the essence of William & Victoria will still be good quality British food with the emphasis on Yorkshire produce served in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.”

The reason for the work was simple, she added - the age of the building meant its infrastructure needed bringing into the 21st century with a dose of tender loving care.
