OPINION: District is proud of Harrogate Town for winning with style and class - Nick Hancock

The month of May has got off to a cracking start (and that is despite the weather which felt more like November at times!).

There’s has been lots to smile about... our listening figures for Your Harrogate Radio are through the roof and have exceeded all our expectations, my wife is finally off furlough and back at work (she is not smiling about this!), despite my young age I have had my first Covid jab and we were able to have our somewhat belated Your Harrogate Christmas party in the pub beer garden!

But the biggest reason to smile came in the rain on Bank Holiday Monday when we all enjoyed Harrogate Town’s fabulous Wembley win!

This newspaper has quite rightly given lots of coverage to the club, the supporters and the impact on the town of two incredible Wembley wins in the last 12 months.

I would like to personally congratulate Simon and Irving Weaver. Two of the nicest people you could wish to meet and great supporters of Your Harrogate for which I am very grateful.

In 2011 I met Simon and Irving and they gave me a fairly unimpressive tour of Harrogate Town’s ground and facilities.

The dated dressing rooms and the rather sad looking club bar didn’t really inspire me, if I am being totally honest.

However, their words did inspire me.

Simon and Irving told me over a coffee of their vision for Harrogate Town. They wanted a team of players who showed passion and professionalism at all times. They wanted local school children to look up to their players.

They wanted team spirit (and no egos) and by playing a key part in the community they wanted to double their attendance and connect with local people.

They wanted the town to feel proud of their football club.

Ten years later it is very impressive and also very unusual in football to have witnessed Simon and Irving achieve everything that they told me they wanted to. The Harrogate district is so proud of Harrogate Town. Not just for winning but for winning with style and class, so fitting for team from Harrogate!
