Olympic spirit boosts volunteers

HARROGATE and Ripon Councils for Voluntary Service (CVS) are hoping that the legacy of this summers Olympic and Paralympic games will inspire people to volunteer on a local level.

Carol Gaiger saw enquiries about volunteering leap from 45 in May to 122 in June as Olympic fever spread across the country.

She said: “The Olympics really did high-light the good work of volunteers and get people inspired.

“It would be fabulous if everyone who volunteered for the games decided to continue volunteering on a local level.”

One of the issues faced by the CVS is how many people lose interest after their initial enquiries.

Ms Gaiger said: “We get a lot of enquiries but sometimes thre process of placing people can take a while.

“CRB checks can take a while, and since they have changed they can seem quite intrusive which puts a lot of people off.”

She recommends for those who are wanting to get into volunteering to, “just be patient”, until they are placed, as the outcome will be so rewarding.
