Ripon MP Julian Smith, has welcomed Ofcom’s announcement that they are to increase the coverage commitment for the 4G spectrum auction from 95 per cent to 98 per cent of the UK population.
The MP has been calling for the change so that rural communities benefit from the improvements and opportunities that 4G is expected to bring.
“It is vitally important that when the 4G spectrum is put up for auction rural Britain is not left behind and I am pleased that Ofcom has now accepted that view,” said Mr Smith.
“As the connection gap between town and country continues, it is having a nappalling impact on rural businesses and households.
“For the economic and social future of our most rural areas we must be as ambitious as possible in delivering the same quality mobile connections as in our cities.
“Combined with the Government’s decision to invest 150 million pounds in infrastructure to improve mobile coverage, this announcement will help rural communities become better connected and provide a major boost for the rural economy.”
