More coronavirus closures as Harrogate Borough Council announces shutdown for leisure centres, swimming pools and galleries

Harrogate Borough Council has announced the measures as authorities across the country take action to comply with the latest government advice on how to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Hide AdThe closures will come into force from tonight, Friday, March 20, but will not apply the council's main buildings including its civic centre headquarters.
Coun Stanley Lumley, cabinet member with responsibility for sport and leisure, said: “We do not take these decisions lightly, but this is the right thing for us to do.
“It is clear that the coronavirus is spreading further. We all have a role to play in doing what we can to prevent it by encouraging greater social distancing.
“By closing these facilities, we’re protecting our customers and our staff.”

Hide AdThe council said online: "We’ve taken the decision to close all of our leisure centres, swimming pools, community centres, Tourist Information Centres, Turkish Baths Harrogate, our two museums and the Mercer art gallery.
"This is with effect from tonight and these buildings will remain closed until further notice. The decision is in line with updated government guidance & reflects the need for us to do what we can to encourage greater social isolation in light of the spread of the coronavirus."

It added: "If you are a member of our venues, having swimming or diving lessons or other regular activities, your membership will be suspended, and you will not be charged for April or May. If you have existing bookings, you’ll be contacted over the coming days.
"It may take us a few days to reach everyone. Our other council services are running as close to normal as possible."
