A leading officer at Harrogate Sea Cadets has been awarded a long service medal in recognition of her commitment and dedication.
Lieutenant Debbie Williams joined Harrogate Sea Cadets as a youngster in 1973 and has worked as an adult volunteer for 32 years.
The 55-year-old was Commanding Officer at the Harrogate TS Cleopatra Unit for 10 years from 2001-2011 and now heads up the junior section for 10-12-year-olds.
She said: “It was quite a wake-up call to discover just how long I’ve been part of Sea Cadets.
“I’ve had so many opportunities over the years both as a young cadet and adult volunteer.
“As a youngster, I loved having the chance to go away with friends, learn about sailing, complete my Duke of Edinburgh Award and enjoy lots of outdoor activities.
“As an adult, it’s very rewarding to see our young cadets gain self-confidence and self-esteem.
“Some cadets have never sailed before when they first join and we really aim to give them the chance to do activities they haven’t necessarily done before. We call it serious fun.”
New Chairman of Harrogate Sea Cadets and local businessman, Mike Langford, said: “Lieutenant Williams’ long-service award is a remarkable achievement and well-deserved recognition for the enormous contribution she has made to our Unit.”
