German discount supermarket giant Lidl is to replace its existing store in Knaresborough with a brand new, bigger store on the site of the former Co-op on Chain Lane.
Lidl has invited shoppers to a public exhibition on proposals to build the replacement store.
Following the closure of the Co-op in November, Lidl purchased the site with the intention to submit a planning application for a 1,690 sq. m. net sales supermarket.
The plans would replace Lidl’s current store on York Road.
We revealed the news first here, in October: Knaresborough Co-Op to close and Lidl to take over site
James Hanna from Lidl’s acquisitions team said: “Our current store on York Road is very popular but it does no longer meet the needs of our future business model.
“Therefore, as part of our national property expansion programme, we would like to build a new larger store in Knaresborough, to enhance the customer experience and provide the full Lidl high-quality product range.
“The new store would create between 20-25 new job opportunities and all existing Lidl employees would transfer to the new store.
“We would urge people to attend the public exhibition and come and view the proposals.”
There are hopes that the Post Office facility, which is still operating from the Co-op site on Chain Lane, could be retained, by moving to the old Lidl site on York Road.
Lidl confirmed in November that the Post Office branch at Chain Lane Co-op would remain open until May, despite the supermarket having already shut its doors.
Lidl is looking to re-organise its existing store on York Road into smaller retail units and is hopeful that a new Post Office facility may be accommodated on that site.
MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough Andrew Jones said in November: “Whilst it is clearly good news that the Chain Lane Post Office Local is to remain open for the next six months it is disappointing not to have a guarantee of a continuing second post office facility in Knaresborough.
“The ideal solution is that the Post Office Local remains permanently at the Chain Lane location.
“People know the facility is there, they have plenty of parking and they can do their shopping or pick up medication from the pharmacy.
“I have therefore written to Lidl once again to impress upon them that this is the desirable outcome.
“Failing this, I would like a guarantee that a replacement Post Office facility will be a priority for the reconfigured retail unit at Lidl’s current store.
“I have therefore written again to the Post Office asking them to make negotiations with Lidl a high priority.”
The public exhibition for the proposed new Lidl store will be held in the Nidd Room at the Chain Lane Community Centre, Chain Lane, Knaresborough on Wednesday January 13 between 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
Members of the development team will be on hand to speak to the community and answer any questions.
