The day is a celebration of the work done in libraries to promote learning, literacy and the enjoyment of reading.

Library users new and old are encouraged to go along to their local library and find out about the great services on offer - from book loans and homework clubs to support with job hunting and how to get online.

Everyone who borrows a book on National Libraries Day will be entered into a prize draw with books, vouchers and annual IT and media subscriptions to be won.

The national event comes as North Yorkshire’s three-month library consultation draws to a close.

People across North Yorkshire have been asked to give their views on proposals for a major expansion of community involvement in the county’s library service, building on the success of current community libraries.

“National Libraries Day gives everybody a chance to celebrate the wonderful services our libraries offer,” said County Coun Chris Metcalfe, executive member for library and information services.

“It is precisely for this reason that during this very tough economic climate we want our communities to work together in partnership with the county council to sustain our library service into the future.”

IT taster sessions covering a range of topics from basic skills to shopping, internet safety and how to download ebooks will be on offer in many libraries on the day.
