Once upon a time, in far-away Northallerton, someone cried “plant more poles”.
Planted they were - all over Harrogate; poles for this, that and nothing-in-particular, one of which sprouted outside Duttons in Oxford Street. Days turned to weeks, months and years; that lonely pole stood there, unpainted, unadorned, unloved and nobody seemed to care.
Recently, a blue ‘Keep Right’ sign was stuck to it. Later still and despite its being bang opposite a powerful street lamp, it was crowned with a brutish solar-powered light; it remains unpainted.
This mysterious sequence was spread over more than two years, during which time, Oxford Street functioned well.
In that same period we have seen cuts to bus services, libraries etc, with more to follow.
Are any of NYCC’s decision-makers affected, or do they live in a similar computer-generated bubble to the Westminster lot?
