LATEST: Man suffers 90 per cent burns in North Yorkshire fire

A man who was rescued from a fire at the sewage works in Tadcaster is in ‘critical condition’ after suffering 90 per cent burns in the incident

Emergency services were called to the water treatment plant in Tadcaster just after midday today (Mon) and a man in his fifties was taken to hospital. He is believed to have been working at the plant. A second man was treated at the scene for minor injuries. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue sent two fire engines at the plant and remain at the scene, along with the heavy rescue unit from Tadcaster, officers and support staff.It is unclear at this point whether the burns were caused by fire or chemicals.

The man who is in his 50s is believed to have been working on the site, but it us currently unclear if his burns are a result of the fire or chemicals at the plant.

He was taken to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield by air ambulance, whilst another man who was rescued from the fire was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “He remains in hospital in a critical condition.”

The North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue team sent two engines to the scene on Oxton Lane at around 12pm yesterday and remain on the scene with police and the heavy rescue unit from Tadcaster.

A joint investigation with the police, the fire service and the Health and Safety Executive is now underway in order to establish the cause of the incident.
