THE new Walkers are Welcome scheme will be officially launched in Knaresborough Market Place on Sunday, March 20.
A national accreditation scheme which recognises places in the UK where visitors and locals alike can enjoy a number of waymarked walks, Knaresborough received its accreditation last year.
To officially mark the event on March 20, there will be two guided walks for people to take part in, one of two and a half miles, and one of four miles. These will each be led by the Mayors of Knaresborough and Harrogate, Couns Richard Hall and Bill Hoult respectively. Anyone who would like to come along should meet at the Market Cross at 1.15pm.
A small committee made up of some town councillors and other volunteers has spearheaded Knaresborough’s campaign to become accredited.
As part of the scheme, an annual report has to be sent to the national body demonstrating how status has been achieved and maintained.
The group also hope later this year to add to the four walks already set up with two new walks and a ‘Picture Bingo’ game for children to enjoy on the walks.
“We are keen to encourage tourists and visitors to visit Knaresborough and recognise it as an excellent base for walkers to come to and within minutes, be out in the surrounding countryside,” said Coun Kevin Hawkins from the Walkers are Welcome group. “We would also welcome any volunteers who would like to join the group, and help check the footpaths for these walks. We need to check signage, for obstructions, closures etc. This has to be done on an annual basis to fulfil scheme requirements.”
The four walk leaflets featuring walks of varying length and difficulty, are available to buy from The Bookshop, Knaresborough High Street, the TIC and Knaresborough House.
For those joining the walks on March 20, strong footwear and waterproofs are advised as the walks will be in the Nidd Gorge area.
The launch event coincides with the Farmers Market which takes place in the Market Place from 9am till 2pm that day.
