A card from Buckingham Palace was a highlight for a Knaresborough couple who have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Fred Bradley met Pauline Wade at the Knaresborough Water Carnival in 1949.

The next day, 18-year-old Fred phoned Pauline, 16, while she was working at Marshall and Snelgrove Department Store to ask her to the fair.

Though the pair were separated for three years while Fred completed his national service in Plymouth, they married on March 6, 1954 at Bilton Church in Harrogate.

They then settled down to married life in Forest Green, Knaresborough, where Fred worked as a postman.

Fred and Pauline Bradley, now in their 80s, celebrated 60 years of married life with a family meal at The George Hotel in Piercebridge and then had a short holiday in Bournemouth.

Fred and Pauline’s daughter Janet said: “I think it’s a bit of an achievement to get to 60 years of marriage.

“They have always been very supportive of us, so even though they told us they didn’t want any gifts we had to get them something.

“You can’t get to an anniversary like this without getting any presents.”

Fred and Pauline were presented with a family tree and professional photographs of their great-granddaughter Chloe.

They were also given a special rose to commemorate their anniversary, and their card from the Palace was an extra treat.

Janet’s daughter Sarah said: “We were told no presents, but we decided to go against that.

“We have been arranging things around the diamond theme, so, because they are both keen gardeners, my mum has ordered them a personalised rose.

“It has been named the diamond rose in honour of their anniversary.

“They will get a seedling and they will then be able to plant their own variety of this special rose.”

Fred retired from the post office in 1991, and after 47 years of service he was awarded the Imperial Service medal.

After leaving Marshall and Snelgrove, Pauline worked as an auxiliary nurse in Knaresborough Hospital.
