Junior Football: Nerveless Pannal Sports lead way in County Cup

Progression into the deep rounds of the junior cups dominated the Harrogate and District junior teams’ schedule over the weekend.

Pannal Sports Under 16s held their nerve in a gripping penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals of the West Riding County Cup, following a 3-3 stalemate with Huddersfield YMCA

Sports hit back from a two-goal deficit through Phil Milson and Joel Fireman’s volley to force two additional periods. YMCA struck first in extra-time before Will Denton pulled it back for Pannal to take it to spotkicks.

Fireman, Luke McAvoy and Dec Hall scored Pannal’s first three kicks before ‘keeper Ben Smith pulled off a heroic save.

Will Denton put Sports 4-2 in front, and Smith was on hand to make another save to send his side into the semis.

Knaresborough Celtic U16s also required extra-time to make the semi-finals as they made it past Warley Rangers away 2-1.

Beckwithshaw Saints U14s Girls were also celebrating a semi-final spot following a 3-0 win over Garforth Rangers in the County FA u14 Junior Trophy on Sunday.

In the U12s league, Alex Ingham scored twice as Harrogate Railway ended Wigton Moor United’s seven match winning run with a 3-3 draw away.

Joint leaders Knaresborough Celtic Green and Pannal Sports pulled ahead of title rivals Pannal Ash in U13s A with victories.

Lucas Abusin fired home a hat-trick as Celtic thrashed Kirk Deighton Rangers 4-0. Ewan Findlay matched Celic’s shooter with a treble in his Sport side’s 5-3 win at Ripon City Panthers, who had Matthew Kirbitson scoring twice.

Liam Whyte’s brace held Pannal Ash to a 2-2 draw at home to Beckwithshaw Saints Rhinos.

In U13s B, Euan Grainger hit a hat-trick on the losing team for Pannal Sports Panthers as Jack Greensit (2) led Killingall Nomads to victory.

Joe Gosling, Cooper Smith and Lewis Finnie guided Pannal Sports Predators past Wetherby 3-1.

Wetherby Athletic maintained their unbeaten status in U14s A with a thrilling 13-0 triumph over Killinghall Nomads. However Pannal Ash Reds stayed above them at the top, with goals from Jordan Atkinson and sub Tinaye Makiwa in beating Kirk Deighton Rangers 2-0.

Braces for Nicholas Michael and Daniel Higgins gave table topping Bedale Bees a 5-2 win over Leeds Maccabi to stretch their lead in U15s C to three points.

Daniel Balbi was also on target twice as Knaresborough Celtic edged basement side Ilkley 3-2.

Meanwhile, Pannal Sports Panthers grabbed their first win of the U16s season, with a single goal win over Ilkley Lions.

Bruno Tajima’s two goals helped Nidd United U17s past Amaranth 5-1, with other goals from Matt Milson, Luke Middleton and Jackson Hobson.

The U18s League title race swung in Helperby United’s favour as Tadcaster Magnet slipped up at home to Pannal Sports Predators.

Goals from subs Danny Smith and Declan Horncastle sent Helperby top with a 2-0 win at Pool. Magnets were denied three points as Panthers’ Ayodeji Adelekan and Kyle Newbould held them to a 2-2 draw.
