Starbeck’s first Community Day was a big success on Saturday, with dozens of groups and businesses taking part to showcase all that Starbeck has to offer.
Stalls and entertainment filled the fields at Harrogate Railway Athletic FC, and the event’s organisers, the Starbeck Christmas lights committee, said they’ve been overwhelmed by the support of the Starbeck community.
Committee member Chrissie Holmes said: “We have so much to offer in Starbeck, and so many businesses that are tucked away off the High Street, that people, including myself, don’t always know about them.
“I am hoping that community day will have encouraged people to come along and see for themselves what we have to offer, and support their local shops. We felt totally overwhelmed by the support we had from local charities, groups, businesses and from the people of Starbeck.” The community day raised more than £400 for Starbeck’s Christmas lights appeal, but the event’s aims also went beyond fundraising. Chrissie said: “Community day wasn’t necessarily about fundraising, as all the pitches were free and so were some of the games. It was about bringing the Starbeck community together.” Representatives from Starbeck in Bloom, Starbeck library, St Andrew’s Church and Starbeck Methodist Church were among those welcoming visitors on the day. Chrissie said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to Harrogate Railway AFC, the Harrogate Advertiser’s Graham Chalmers for coming along and playing his excellent Chalms choice-Music, and a big thank you to Starbeck Post Office, Starbeck swimming pool, Starbeck in Bloom, Elite Meat, the Co-op, and Mitchell’s Butchers for their continued support, and also to Christine Stewart who is the local stalwart of our community, for helping us make this day possible.”
The hard-working Starbeck Christmas lights committee has organised fundraising events throughout the year - including a strawberry fair at St Andrew’s Church on July 21, 2pm-4.30pm, and a pub quiz night at Harrogate Railway Athletic FC on August 25, starting at 8pm.
