Restaurants such as Ask should then begin opening in May in the new building at 5 Albert Street, the Harrogate Advertiser has been told, though Everyman cinema is not now set to open there until September.

But in exciting news for film fans in the district, the new Everyman in Harrogate is to be a sizable one - with five screens over three floors.

It should offer some real competition to the town's Odeon cinema, a listed building which first opened in 1936.

As shoppers in the town centre will have noticed the new three-storey building has taken shape rapidly since the former town centre department store at the corner of Albert Street and Station Parade was demolished last year.

Paul Lancaster BSc MRICS of Harrogate-based developers 4Urban Consulting Ltd said completion of the development is scheduled for April 18 when the handover to tenants will begin.

He said: "We have this week given access to one of the restaurant tenants, CAU, to commence their fit out and on this basis they will be trading by the end of May.

"We are also handing over to Yo Sushi and ASK on March 21 with the remaining tenants commencing their fit out on practical completion."

Mr Lancaster added that he expected the work on Everyman cinema to take 22 weeks.

It had been hoped the four-screen cinema, best known for swapping the traditional cinema seat and popcorn in favour of comfy sofas and pizzas, would be ready by the summer.

But a spokesperson for Everyman now says it's aiming to launch in September, subject to change.

With its ground floor alone offering 2,238 sq ft of space, the new development has proven popular with tenants.

Ask restaurant confirmed this week they would be opening in May.

As a result, there is now only one unit left to be let at 5 Albert Street, said Paul Lancaster.
