The owner of one of Harrogate's leading independent traders has praised last weekend's Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate.

Andrew Langshaw, who owns Harrogate Fine Wine Co in the Montpellier Quarter, was responding to recent articles in the Harrogate Advertiser about challenges to the retail sector in the town centre.

Andrew said: "I think with all the talk of the concerns on the high street it is worth heaping praise on what is really a jewel in Harrogate’s crown by way of the Crime Writing Festival.
"Over the years this has become one of our most anticipated events and it really is perfect for Harrogate."

A key name in Harrogate’s wine and beer retail scene for more than 30 years, Andrew recently moved premises to another part of the Montpellier Quarter to 3 Montpellier Street.
Both Harrogate Borough Council and Harrogate Chamber of Commerce believe holding more public events is an important part of attracting visitors and ensuring the future prosperity of the town centre.

Andrew said events like the crime writing festival presented by Harrogate International Festivals from last Thursday to Sunday were a really positive force in the town.

They not only brought star names such as John Grisham, Lee Child and Val McDermid to Harrogate, they also gave a boost to local businesses.

He said: "The crime writing festival brings so many people to the town which is good for the hotels and restaurants.
"But the best thing from a retail perspective is there is plenty of time in-between the sessions for the guests to explore the town.

"As events go in Harrogate this really is the ideal mix of attracting people to Harrogate and allowing them to explore the town.
"A model well worth remembering for future events. Roll on the Gilbert and Sullivan upcoming festival…"
