A Harrogate football fan beat odds of nearly 5000/1 to become the first big winner of the season.

The mystery punter selected 16 teams from leagues and trophy competitions across Europe for his accumulator, and bet £5 on his selection at odds of 4995/1 with William Hill.

The man does not want named, and staff at the bookmaker’s Leeds Road branch said they had not seen him before he made the bet on Saturday.

He picked up his total winnings of £24,975.89 on Monday morning, and told staff he is looking to start his own business with the cash.

The Leeds United fan was waiting on the result of Manchester United’s Community Shield tie against Wigan Athletic on Sunday afternoon.

He said: “It is the first time I can remember cheering Manchester United.”

William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly said: “It is hard enough picking one winner, let alone 16.

“This is a spot of top football punting and the longest odds payout of the season thus far.”

The accumulator predicted 14 home wins, and two victories from teams playing away from home.

The punter selected matches from the English Championship, League One, League Two, football conference, the German Bundesliga, Scottish League One and French Ligue One as well as correctly predicting Manchester United’s Community Shield win over Wigan Athletic.
