After hearing the latest news that Boris Johnson was in intensive care receiving oxygen support after failing to shake off the virus, Mr Jones wished the nation's leader a safe recovery.

Mr Jones said: “Every one of us will know someone who is poorly or self isolating, and some of us will have lost loved ones. My heart goes out to them.

"I have sent my very best wishes to the Prime Minister, and send them to everyone suffering from this awful virus. I wish them all a speedy recovery."

With the Prime Minister fighting for his health in the intensive care unit at St Thomas’ hospital in London, Mr Jones paid tribute to all NHS staff.

He said: "These tough times are unprecedented. All elements of British life have been affected.

"My heart also goes out but with gratitude to those who are working so hard in the NHS and the care sector to keep our nation well.

"Our role as individuals is to follow the medical advice to slow the spread of the virus.

"That advice is saving lives. We know what we have to do."

And he again praised Harrogate's new role as host of an NHS Nightingale hospital capable of holding 500 beds for coronavirus sufferers.

Mr Jones said: "It is a good thing that our area has been able to go further and host a Nightingale Hospital, one of the few in the country.

"Since welcoming the announcement, I have followed its progress and the speed with which it has been constructed is impressive.

"Well done to the NHS and army teams that have made that happen.”
