A parking ticket was slapped on the Mayor of Harrogate’s chauffer-driven car while he attended a civic event at St Peter’s Church.

The driver had parked the mayoral car - a black Skoda Superb - in a nearby loading bay in Cambridge Road on Saturday morning when it was spotted by a parking attendant.

The Mayor, Cllr Nigel Simms, and the Mayoress, Lynn Simms, were attending the opening of the Charity Christmas Card Shop at the church.

Harrogate Borough Council’s parking attendants issue fines of either £35 or £25, which double if unpaid within 14 days.

A council spokesperson said: “The official mayoral car is not exempt from parking regulations. The driver contravened these parking restrictions and was correctly issued with a Penalty Charge Notice accordingly.”
