On Saturday Wendy Lill will start her extreme week-long fundraising challenge, covering 50 miles a day on a sled pulled by a team of huskies. Camping at extreme temperatures of -30 degrees, Wendy is looking forward to being pushed beyond her limits for a good cause.

She said: “I fancied doing something completely different, that is well out of my comfort zone. The physical challenge will be really, really difficult with long days. It will be completely draining, mentally and physically.

“And I absolutely hate the cold, so this will be very challenging for me. But I am looking forward to pushing myself. If the conditions are right, I will get to see the northern lights. I am excited and nervous, thinking what have I let myself in for. Nuffield gym has been really supportive of my training.

“I am taking three luxury items with me on the trip - hot chocolate sachets, marshmallows and jelly babies.”

Chief Executive of Saint Michael’s Hospice, Tony Collins, said: “Wendy’s fundraising efforts, which total more than £14,000 to date, are a remarkable example of what can be achieved when someone sets themselves a personal challenge and supports their local hospice care charity.

“We’d like to thank Wendy for her time and perseverance in raising these vital funds, which will help Saint Michael’s support more local families affected by terminal illness and bereavement.

“We wish her the very best of luck.”

Dozens of people stopped to take photos of a three metre tall teddy bear made from hay bales that Wendy placed in an Arkendale field to raise money for the hospice. Wendy raised thousands by asking people to suggest a name and make a donation. She also organised a wine tasting event at Harrogate’s Veeno bar, which raised £520.
