Harrogate event on album that sold 10 million in a year

A world famous band which has forged an amazing recovery out of the blue after being dormant for decades is the focus of Harrogate’s Vinyl Sessions this Friday.

With Jeff Lynne’s ELO now charts stars once again with latest album From Out Of Nowhere, the vintage hi-fi classic rock album night on December 27 will shine the spotlight on Out of the Blue.

First released in 1977 after being written in Switzerland and recorded in Munich, this luxurious double album sold ten million copies in its first year alone – and it’s still selling.

Boasting hit singles including Sweet Talkin’ Woman, Turn to Stone and Mr Blue Sky, its17 wide-ranging tracks are still regarded as the sophisticated British pop-rock band’s high water mark.

Fresh new branding for Yorkshire brewery's beerInfluences from doo wop to Chuck Berry, Hollywood to the Wild West, romantic strings to space age synths, Jeff Lynne’s inventive arrangements and hook-laden melodies haver never been better than on Out of the Blue which spent two years non stop on the British album charts on its original release.

Taking place at Starling Independent Bar-Café, it will be the final Vinyl Sessions fundraiser of the year for the Friends of Harrogate Hospital.

The event will feature an introduction to the album by Vinyl Sessions’ regular speaker, Graham Chalmers of the Harrogate Advertiser.

To spice things up for hi fi aficiando and organiser Colin Paine, he has set himself the target of creating a top notch vintage hi-fi from scratch for just £100 to play the album on.

The visuals of ELO to accompany the playback will be created by Jim Dobbs.

Tickets are free to reserve but a suggested donation of £5 to the charity on admission is be appreciated.
