Gareth Southgate favourite to replace Roy Hodgson as England boss

Fewston's Gareth Southgate has been installed as the early bookmaker's favourite to succeed Roy Hodgson as England boss.

Hodgson stepped down straight after England's humiliating Euro 2016 exit at the hands of Iceland on Monday.

Southgate, who lives in Fewston near Harrogate, has led England's Under 21 set up since 2013 and recently guided the team to glory in the Toulon Tournament in France.

Hodgson used the former England defender as a scout during the European Championships.

In the aftermath of Hodgson's resignation, Southgate tops the list of potential candidates with the bookmaker's offering odds around 6/4.

The 45-year-old, who played for Pannal Ash in the Nidderdale Cricket League a week before flying out to France, also managed Middlesbrough between 2006 and 2009 at the end of an 18-year playing career.

He famously missed the crucial penalty for England in the Euro 1996 semi-final defeat to Germany.
