Family trio land accolades at cricket event

Three members of the same family were applauded by their colleagues at Whixley and District Cricket Club for landing major honours last season.

Patrick Greenwood won the first XI best batting, best bowling and best all-rounder trophies at senior level.

His daughters Hannah and Sarah were voted junior club-persons of the year at the club’s recent annual awards evening.

Awards were presented by Jonathan Corcoran, Chairman of Harrogate District Cricket Development Group, at a packed gathering at The Anchor Inn, Whixley, following a celebration carvery meal.

Jonathan congratulated all junior members in particular, and said: “It always gives me a kick when I see kids’ smiling faces as they individually step forward to receive their trophies and certificates.

“The youth of today are the potential county players and celebrities of tomorrow.”

He gave encouraging words to “all who are contributing to make the club such a thriving movement, that over the past five years has become such an integral part of the local community, since the formation of the Junior Phoenix section”.

The junior section has grown from one mixed age-group of a dozen members, six years ago, to four different age-groups of over 60 members.

Presentations to juniors were introduced by team coaches Jordan Webster, Tim Harvey, Charles Baines and Gary Bartlett, who gave overall summaries of their teams’ 2015 highlights.

The following junior members received special trophies – under nine years: best batting, Lorcan Crosby; best bowling, Will Harvey; best fielding, Charlie Scarsbrook; most improved player, Oscar Sutton; players’ player William Munns.

Under 11s: best batting, James Harvey; best bowling and batting, Ennis MacKenzie; most improved Ethan Knight; players’ player Noah Doyle.

Under 13s: best batting Katie Baines; best bowling Jonathan Richardson; best fielding Oliver Bartlett; most improved Joe Baines; players’ player Jonathan Richardson.

Most promising young player: Ennis MacKenzie; most promising newcomer: Leon Blackburn; junior club stars of the year: Hannah and Sarah Greenwood.
