Exclusive: Harrogate Town player faces FA betting rap after tweeting accumulator photo

Harrogate Town midfielder Warren Burrell is facing a rap from the Football Association after posting a photo of his betting slip online.

Burrell posted a snapshot of a football accumulator on Saturday, which would have returned more than £600 from a £30 stake had Sheffield Wednesday beaten Rotherham United.

The accumulator also included bets on Middlesbrough, French outfit Dijon FC and a horse race from Wolverhampton.

Burrell wrote on Twitter: “This is my bet that I let ride from last night..... Sheff Wednesday have had 3 disallowed goals.”

The tweet has since been deleted.

Tough new laws were introduced at the start of the 2014/15 season to discourage match fixing in the game.

Semi-professional and professional footballers playing within the top eight tiers of the game are banned from betting on football matches from anywhere in the world.

The previous betting rules only banned players and officials of clubs betting on competitions which their club was involved in.

The FA confirmed it was investigating Burrell's post. which “suggests actions which contravene the rules regarding betting in football.”

A statement read: “These rules exist to help protect the integrity of football, and we are committed to preserving what is great about the beautiful game.

“A worldwide ban on betting on football came into force from 1 August 2014 for all those involved in the game at Premier League, Football League, National League and Women's Super League levels. This ban also covers participants in the the Northern, Southern and Isthmian leagues.

“Participants covered by the ban are prohibited from betting, either directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition that takes place anywhere in the world.”

Town managing director Garry Plant said: "At the present time, the club is looking into the matter.

"We will be making a formal announcement in due course."

Burrell re-signed for Town from Evo-Stik Northern Premier League side Buxton in January and scored twice in the 6-0 rout over Solihull Moors on his debut.

The midfielder is currently serving a three-match ban after receiving his marching order in the 5-0 win over FC United of Manchester last month.

Premier League footballers Andros Townsend, Cameron Jerome and Dan Gosling are among those who have breached betting regulations in the past.

Townsend was fined £18,000 by the FA in June 2013, striker Jerome £50,000 last August and midfielder Gosling £30,000 in March.
