Zero Carbon Harrogate's message of hope for greener future in Harrogate

Zero Carbon Harrogate is stepping up its efforts to highlight climate change as Harrogate contemplates a possible new future with a less car-centric transport system.

The green pressure group which was founded in 2016 has been running a successful series of films and Q&As online during lockdown under the banner "Post-pandemic Visions."

The final event held in partnership with UNA Harrogate (United Nations Association) will take place next Wednesday, July 22 at 7pm with a screening of the film 2040 followed by live Q&A with an expert local panel.

This 2019 Australian documentary directed by and starring Damon Gameau looks at the effects of climate change over the next 20 years and what technologies that exist today can reverse the effects.

The expert panel will include Coun Phil Ireland (Chair of Harrogate Climate Coalition and cabinet member for sustainable transport), Jemima Parker (Chair, Zero Carbon Harrogate), and Ian Fraser (Chair, natural climate solutions for Zero Carbon Harrogate).

The film will be shown online, followed by the panel discussion via Zoom.

Links will be sent prior to the event, which is free, though donations are welcome.

Numbers are limited and booking is required via the website zerocarbonharrogate.org.uk/events

Meanwhile, Zero Carbon Harrogate's new monthly Climate Forum events will start in partnership with UNA Harrogate on September 14.

The first event will be on the topic of Data for sustainability - with panelists from Barrett Values Centre and AxiaOrigin.

The event on October 12 will be about reducing carbon emissions from our homes through insulation and retrofitting.

The event on November 9 will see Professor Piers Forster and Professor Andy Shepherd from the University of Leeds joining to discuss the lessons global climate science has for the Harrogate district.
