Storm warning for Harrogate district as Met Office says scorching weekend will be followed by severe thunder and lightning

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the whole of the UK, which is in place for all of Monday and Tuesday (August 10 and 11).

There is "significant uncertainty in location and timing" of the thunderstorms according to forecasters, who have warned of flooding.

The yellow weather warning means there heavy rain could cause flooding, disruption to transport and power cuts.

The heavy rain will come off the back of what is expected to be the hottest weekend of the year, with temperatures expected to reach more than 30 degrees on Friday and Saturday (August 7 and 8), potentially reaching 37 degrees in London.

* There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes and large hail.

* Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to public transport.

* Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and increased chance of accidents.
