Floods hit area after heavy rain

Police issued an urgent appeal after a Wetherby car park was submerged in water following a weekend of heavy rain which swelled the River Wharfe.

West Yorkshire Police said the Wilderness car park had flooded on Monday afternoon, leaving “a number of cars” standing in the water.

Spreading the word on social media, its Leeds North East Policing Team wrote: “Urgent... the Wilderness car park at Wetherby is flooding and a number of cars have been damaged.

“Some cars can still be saved, however. If you are parked there, please come and move your car is a matter of urgency. If can share this message it would be appreciated.”

A yellow weather warning for rain, meaning flooding is expected, was in place across Yorkshire and the Humber on Monday night.

Tadcaster Community Action Group kept a close watch on the flooded River Wharfe and issued alerts via its facebook page.

The group reported that the river peaked at 3.39m in the early hours of Tuesday.

Posting a photograph of the floods they added: “We wonder how many of these pictures we may have this winter?”

It reported on Tuesday that roads were closed locally at Kirby Wharfe/Ulleskelf: Raw Lane and Stutton Village: Mill Lane; Albions/Crane cottages and Mill Lane near Sainsburys.

Tadcaster Albion announced on Tuesday afternoon that its Global Stadium had suffered flooding yet again, following extensive damage in February’s floods.

“Tadcaster Albion regrets to announce that it’s ground, The Global Stadium, has again suffered considerable flooding as a result of the River Wharfe bursting its banks following the recent heavy and prolonged rainfall,” said a spokesman.

“At this time it has not been possible to access the building which houses the club house and changing rooms.

“The water level is currently receding.

“A further statement will be issued as soon as more information is to hand.”
