Commercial waste accepted at tip

Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in North Yorkshire will start accepting commercial waste again from Saturday, July 4, to support local businesses.

All the County Council’s HWRCs closed temporarily in March, in response to Government restrictions to protect the public during the COVID-19 pandemic and gradually began to welcome back residents in May.

With lockdown restrictions easing further and many local businesses reopening on July 4, the sites will also now allow disposal of some types of commercial waste.

North Yorkshire County Council accepts certain types of commercial waste for a charge at its household waste recycling centres in North Yorkshire, with the exception of Harrogate Stonefall HWRC.

Household Waste Recycling Centres will also resume selling bags of Yorganics compost, which is 100 per cent recycled, peat-free compost that has been sourced and produced locally. The bagged compost is £4 per 40 litre or £10 for three bags and is available from all sites. Some sites also have home composting bins for sale.

Coun Andrew Lee, Executive Member for Waste Management, said: “We are keen to support local businesses as much as possible during this crucial time as many begin trading again as some lockdown restrictions ease.

“Household Waste Recycling Centres have been working hard to put arrangements in place that will allow the disposal of some commercial waste to resume.

“We ask people observe the guidance in place at HWRCs on social distancing and hygiene to help prevent the spread of the virus.”
