Empty Ripon clothes shop could become a pizza takeway

The empty Edetopiashop, in North Street, Ripon, which could be turned into a pizza shop.

The new takeaway would replace the empty Edetopia shop, on 82 North Street, which is part of a Grade II listed building.

Rumours are circulating that Domino's will move into the unit, which is next to Lockwoods restaurant, however the pizza chain has yet to confirm this.

A planning statement, which has been submitted to Harrogate Borough Council by Pegasus Group, on behalf of P&M Holding, says: "The proposed takeaway will employ approximately 35 members of staff and most of these will be sourced locally and will therefore provide a significant boost to the local economy of Ripon.

"The store will also be open during daytime hours and into the evening, therefore contributing actively to both the daytime and nightime economy of Ripon."

However, there have already been several objections to the proposals, with residents raising concerns over traffic issues and the loss of retail outlets in the city.

Sandra Lawrence said: "Ripon needs more retail shops, not more takeaways. Retail shops bring shoppers and tourists and there are already enough fast food places and cafes to fulfill anyone's needs. there needs to be more diversity in Ripon not more of the same. I also believe there will be a temptation for people to pull up outside the premises to collect their takeaway, near a corner and on double yellow lines."

Stephen Craggs added: "This property should remain as A1 retail because too many Ripon retail properties have been converted to food establishments. This detracts from the daytime economy and will have a knock-on impact on retailers on North Street."

As part of the proposals, the "attractive features" of the existing shop front will be retained and redecorated and there will be some internal alterations to accommodate the new layout of the takeaway, which includes a "bake and serve" area in the centre of the store.

The plans say: "The features which will be removed are not historical elements of the building which contribute to its historic and architectural importance."

Requesting that planning consent is granted, Pegasus Group adds: "The proposed development will make positive use of a town centre unit and support the vitality and viability of Ripon by increasing footfall and providing job opportunities for local residents."
