A young swimmer with family in Harrogate will be the youngest person to take part in this year’s Great North Swim.
Ellie White, 12, is taking on the half-mile route in Lake Windermere in June to raise cash for Saint Michael’s Hospice.
Ellie was born in Harrogate but lives in Burnley, Lancasire.
She is hoping to raise £350 for the hospice, in response to the treatment her auntie received there earlier this year.
Ellie said: “I am really excited for the swim.
“I am doing a lot of training in the pool, and I have sponsorship forms up at my school and at church.”
Ellie’s mum Rachael is also taking on the swim, and will accompany Ellie on her route before completing her own swim.
Rachael said: “Ellie will be the youngest competitor at the swim, she only makes the cut by eight days.
“Ellie said she was going to do the swim for her auntie Jane White, because of how the Saint Michael’s staff looked after her.
“Ellie’s uncle thought it was a lovely idea, she wanted to make sure she was doing the swim for a reason. If she makes the money, that’s great.
“I have swum it three years in a row, and I’ll go in there with Ellie.”
The half mile class is the only one under-18s may enter.
More than 10,000 people are expected to take part in the challenge.
