A RIPON schoolboy is on his way to becoming a rising star of Yorkshire football.
Seven-year-old Alfie Shaw has been attending training sessions at Leeds United’s Youth Development Programme after his star qualities were spotted by scouts at an open trials day held at the club’s training ground near Wetherby.
Alfie was invited to join the youth programme after impressing coaches with his skills and drills, and has been to six weeks of training at a Clifton Moor ground.
He was one of only three young players to make it onto the programme out of around 40 attending that day, and is now one of 10 players in the under 8 age group at the training sessions.
Dad Mike said: “He loves it, and as long as he is enjoying it we will support him, but we are not going to push him.
“It’s very well run and professional, so we’re very happy with it.”
But despite training with Leeds Alfie has not switched his allegiance from Liverpool FC, and even turns up to practice in the club’s red kit.
“Alfie is a massive Liverpool fan. He was a little nervous of going to training in his Liverpool kit to begin with, but then saw all of the other lads go along in their respective team kits.
“The coaches seem more interested in bringing the kids on than who they support,” Mike added.
Closer to home, Alfie plays for Knaresborough Celtic’s under 8s team and plays friendly matches with his school Bishop Monkton Primary.
