Drivers told of Sutton Bank closure

The £250,000 programme will lead to the closure of Sutton Bank, which carries the A170 up an extreme gradient, for two weeks during which time traffic will be diverted along the caravan route through Coxwold and Ampleforth.

Following the two-week closure, traffic lights will be in use for around a further six weeks.

“As well as carrying out the annual maintenance programme, we are taking this opportunity to carry out further works which have become necessary.

“It’s impossible to do this without closing the road, and then controlling traffic by lights,” said North Yorkshire County Council’s member for highways, Coun Don Mackenzie.

Works include reinstating crash barriers and repairs to the route. Temporary traffic signals will be in place from September 1, it will be shut for two weeks from September 7 and will be controlled by lights for the next six weeks.
