The first dementia day centre from Over the Rainbow Care is now open in Starbeck.
Sessions consist of tailored activities chosen by service users and at the end of each day the following week’s session is discussed and planned.
The aim here is to provide support for people with dementia, encouraging exercise and cognitive activity.
An added benefit, however, is the respite it gives carers who are able to rest easy in the knowledge that their loved ones are looked after.
Director Megan Sweeting said: “It is very person-centred and we plan activities together and I organise them for the day.
“We want it to be a community feel and I think it is. We want it to feel like a club that people come to every week and meet their friends.
“The feedback we have had so far has been brilliant. One lady really didn’t want to come but her family convinced her and her wellbeing has improved already.
“Our care plans are really thorough so it is completely tailored to them and incorporates their history. Every single person that comes has a story and we want to promote shared experiences.”
A day at the centre costs £55. Go to www.overtherainbowcare.co.uk for more information.
