Delivery services boom in Harrogate boosting indie businesses and fans of cakes and beer

Delivery services are booming in Harrogate - that's the heart-warning message from local independents  which have gone online to serve customers at home as businesses are forced into 'hibernation' by the coronavirus lockdown.

The Fat Badger pub-restaurant at the White Hart Hotel has been busy bringing in takeaway boxes and sorting out additional drivers for its new delivery service.

The team from Baltzersen’s cafe opened their new bakery 'Bakeri Baltzersen’ at Kettlesing Head and the website went live for orders over the weekend.

The demand for the bakery's fresh bread and pastries has been incredible so far with hundreds of orders in the time since Bakeri was launched.

Meanwhile, the response to Roosters brewery's online delivery business has been hailed as "incredibly heart-warming."

Rooster’s Brewing Co's commercial manager Tom Fozard said: "We can’t express our thanks enough to everyone who’s supported us by ordering via our web shop so far.

"It’s been incredibly heart-warming – especially as it’s pretty much the only source of income we have until pubs are permitted to reopen.

"Our free home delivery service was set up on the back of us having chosen to resist requests to open our Taproom as a form of off licence for people to collect takeaway beers from, opting to put it into a state of hibernation in order to limit the number of people visiting the site and so needed to offer a new way for people to be able to get their hands on our beers – especially if they are self-isolating."

The determination to survive and prosper in these challenging times is, perhaps, best summed up by Paul Rawlinson, the owner of Baltzersen's cafe.

Mr Rawlinson said: "“I have to pay tribute to the incredible efforts of the team at the bakery.

"They have spent the last couple of weeks, cleaning, organising, planning and that all culminated in a really successful test bake under a lot of pressure this past Saturday.

"What they have achieved in a short period of time."

The bakery reported more than 300 orders in the first 48 hours after launching the online shop with cinnamon buns being by far the most popular option."

Mr Rawlinson continued: "“It’s been a really challenging time trying to push the project forward in the face of the challenges from COVID-19.

"We knew we could play a part in supporting our community with bread as a staple foodstuff, but beyond that eating a familiar treat like a cinnamon bun can provide a sense of much-needed normality during a tough period.”

Rooster’s Brewing Co's commercial manager Tom Fozard said the support of both customers and staff has been amazing.

Mr Fozard said: "We’ve been blown away by the response we’ve received since the new service went live and are doing our best to keep up with demand – aiming to deliver the next day for orders placed before 1pm (Monday to Friday) where possible.

"Our new Take-Home Taproom, a mixed case consisting of fifteen of our beers, pubs snacks from two of our favourite independent supplies (including The Kernels from Harrogate), a Taproom branded glass and a pub quiz, has been so popular with customers, we’re struggling to keep the Taproom cases in stock!"

Roosters' Taproom is available at www.roosters.co.uk

Bakeri Baltzersen are offering a click and collect facility Tue-Sat from 9am-1pm or free deliveries (£20 minimum applies) to an 8km radius of Harrogate daily with up to 90 slots. Further details are available on the FAQ page of their website: www.bakeribaltzersen.co.uk
