On this day in Yorkshire 1953: Lorry hit pram but baby was unhurt

A 14-month-old baby. Anne Scaife, of Oakwood, Horbury Road, Wakefield, escaped injury when a six-ton lorry loaded with coal mounted the pavement in Wakefield Road, Horbury, yesterday and overturned the perambulator in which she was being wheeled by her mother. The child was taken to Wakefield Clayton Hospital suffering from shock but was not detained.

Home water rate increase referred back at Ossett

A recommendation to increase the price of water supplied to domestic consumers, but to make no increase in the charge for metered supplies to industrial consumers, was referred back by seven votes to six at Ossett Town Council meeting last night. This was after a Socialist amendment to raise the industrial charges had been defeated.

Goole offers to take Iceland fish

The corporation of Goole, in land seaport of the West Riding at the head of the Humber estuary, have offered the Icelandic Legation in Britain the facilities of the port for landing fish from iceland trawlers.

This move is the strongest challenge yet made to the year old ban on Icelandic fish by the fishing industry of Grimsby, 30 miles away at the Humber mouth.
