A HARROGATE woman was sentenced after deliberately setting fire to her home and endangering the life of the man with who she lived.

Jean Margaret Scurr, 61, now of Sutton Grange Close, appeared at York Crown Court on Friday, March 24, accused of arson with intent to endanger life, after starting a fire in the house she shared with Kenneth Bell in Knox Way, Harrogate, on September 10 last year.

Her hearing had previously been postponed after Scurr collapsed in court in October and an ambulance had to be called to attend her.

The court heard Scurr’s barrister plea for a merciful sentence, suggesting that his client’s history of mental health and alcohol problems meant that a internment would simply be too damaging.

Judge Stephen Ashurst sentenced Scurr to an 18 month community order, with 12 months supervision, and a six month alcohol treatment requirement, as well as a six month exclusion order prohibiting her from returning to the house, adding that any breach of her sentence would result in her being brought back before the court and that another judge might take a different view on the matter.
