The body of an elderly woman found in the River Nidd at Knaresborough has been idenified by police.

The women is from Harrogate and in her 70s, however police are not in a position to release the identity of the woman.

Police had been appealing for information relating to the womans death after the body was discovered in the River Nidd near the Viaduct and Mother Shiptons Cave.

Following a search of the area, officers found a black coat with a leopard print collar by the side of the river.

Officers have not found anything to suggest there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

Detective Sergeant Horne added: “I also need to speak to anyone who was in the area near the River Nidd, prior to the body being located, so that I can understand how the woman came to be in the river.”
