A teenage boy is in hospital with serious head injuries after a hit-and-run on Skipton Road in Harrogate.

The 17-year-old, struck as he crossed the road at the junction near the Empress roundabout, is said to be under observation after the incident at 4.25pm yesterday (Wednesday).

The driver of a grey Seat Arosa, which failed to stop at the scene, a woman in her late 70s, contacted police a short time after the incident.

The road was closed until late last night as police investigated. No arrests have been made and police are now appealing for witnesses.

Traffic Sergeant Hamish Halloway, of the Force’s Roads Policing Group, said: “If you witnessed the collision and have not yet contacted the police, I urge you to do so straight away.

“I am also keen to speak to anyone who saw the boy or car just prior to the incident and ask them to get in touch.”
