Crews from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were called twice in just over one hour yesterday evening to deal with two bin fires in the town.

The first fire was reported in a wheelie bin in Belmont Park, just off High Street, at around 8pm and had been started by a group of youths.

However, just one hour later crews were called to the park off Sycamore Drive to another report of a fire in a wheelie bin.

Crews were quickly able to extinguish both fires using beaters, knapsack sprayers and a hose reel jet but confirmed they believe both were started deliberately.

On Wednesday, November 2, crews were again called to a fire in Belmont Park in Starbeck and were able to use buckets of water to extinguish it.

Police are now investigating the arson in Belmont Park and have urged anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact them on 101 quoting reference NYP-07112016-0442.
