Popular Harrogate PC to tackle half marathon

A Harrogate PC is swapping boots on the beat for running shoes as she trains to take on her first half marathon.

With just 60 days to go PC Amanda Hanusch-Moore is training hard for the Great Cumbrian half marathon on the October 4.

The popular PC says she has run 10ks in the past and has been training regularly to push herself that extra distance.

She said: “I am obviously quite fit and have done things like Yorkshire Warrior and 10ks before but not this distance all in one stretch.

“There is still a bit of a mental block when I get to the 10k at the moment, but I am hoping to be able to push through it and get to that thirteenth mile.”

PC Hanusch-Moore said she has the support of her colleagues in the police force.

She said: “If ever I am out on a training run in Harrogate, and a police car or van goes past they always give me a wave.”

As the beat manager for Woodfield PC Hanusch-Moore is well known in the community and hopes to get the backing and support of the people she meets out and about on the beat.

PC Hanusch-Moore hopes to raise funds for both Yorkshire Cancer Research and the Cystic Fibrosis trust, both of which are close to her heart.

She said: “My husband and sister-in-law both have cystic fibrosis, I have raised money for the trust in the past and it is a charity I feel passionately about.”

She has chosen to also support Yorkshire Cancer Research after the death of her colleague, Police Sergeant Tom Jackson, who died in May after battling the disease.

She said: “His death was quite a shock to us all, he had only been diagnosed last year. He was very well loved, well known and well respected in Harrogate.”

Cancer has also affected PC Hanusch-Moore’s own family, she was just 21-years-old when her father died of pancreatic cancer, and her grandmother died of ovarian cancer.

She said: “My grandmother was a typical old lady who didn’t want to bother people or go to the doctor until it was too late and it doesn’t have to be like that.”

Harrogate-based Yorkshire Cancer Research is the UK’s largest regional medical research charity and money raised goes to fund research and support initiatives that will help people in Yorkshire avoid, survive and cope with cancer.
