A blue, strong wire was placed between two posts on Deighton Road on December 11 at 12.30am.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “It was of head height and was high enough for a car, motorcycle or a bicycle to go into and would have caused a serious injury. It looked like a trap that had been set up.”

Wetherby Sgt Iain Mckelvey said: “We are obviously very keen to identify the irresponsible individual who has done this.

“If readers see someone putting up a wire like this they should phone 999 at once.

“It is “an emergency” as something is happening that causes a danger there and then and the offender is still present.”
