Man stole chocolates from McColls: Latest decisions from Harrogate Magistrates Court

Clifford Daniel McDermid, 39, of Alderson Court, Harrogate, was given a six-month conditional discharge for stealing two boxes of chocolates from McColls in King Edward’s Drive. He was ordered to pay compensation of £2.

Lee Richard Shaw, 41, of Littondale Avenue, Knaresborough, was given a 12-month community order for assaulting a man by beating him at The Board Inn, High Street, Knaresborough. He was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and to pay compensation of £750, costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £85. He was excluded from The Board Inn for 12 months.

Shane Gordon Bainbridge, 26, of King Edward Road, Ripon, was fined £80 for stealing a mountain bike worth £80 from Grove Park, Ripon, while subject to a conditional discharge for theft. He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £30.

Christopher James Earle, 41, of Stonefall Avenue, Harrogate, was given a 12-month conditional discharge for stealing electrical items worth £421.49 from Boots in Cambridge Street. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £20 and costs of £85.

Michael James John Valentine, 33, of Royal Naval Air Station, RNAS Yeovilton Road, Yeovil, was given a 12-month community order for using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour towards a man on the A61 in Harrogate, likely to cause fear of violence, which the court found was racially aggravated. He was ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work and to pay compensation of £150, costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £85.

The following were dealt with on March 2:

Jason Johnson, 19, of no fixed address, was given an 18-month community order for stealing Chanel fragrance products from Boots in Cambridge Street, Harrogate, He was ordered to pay compensation of £473.

Stephen Paul Cattanach, 41, of no fixed address, was given a two-week prison sentence for stealing a smartphone from a woman in Bower Road. He was ordered to pay compensation of £160.

Nicola Gibson, 41, of Lupton Close, Glasshouses, was fined £120 for driving an unlicensed large goods vehicle on the A61 in Harrogate. She was ordered to pay vehicle excise back duty of £25 and costs of £85.

Carl Jay Cervi, 37, of Exeter Crescent, Harrogate, was given a 12-month community order for possession of three kitchen knives in Burns Way, Harrogate. He was ordered to complete treatment for alcohol dependency and to pay a victim surcharge of £85 and costs of £85. Magistrates ordered that the knives be confiscated.

The following were dealt with on February 28:

Kevin John Crane, 63, of Wolsey Close, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, was fined £300 for driving a heavy goods vehicle on the A1(M) at Wetherby while under the influence of alcohol. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and costs of £85, and was disqualified from driving for 16 months, to be reduced by 16 weeks on completion of an approved course.

Stephen Glynn, 34, of Bexley Terrace, Harehills, Leeds, was fined £130 for having a lock knife on the A61 in Harrogate. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and the knife was confiscated. He was fined a further £80 for possession of cannabis and was ordered to pay costs of £85. Magistrates ordered that the drug be forfeited and destroyed.

Gavin Michael Hewson, 40, of Maple Walk, Ripon, was fined £400 for assaulting a man at the Kings Club, Harrogate, by beating him. He was ordered to pay compensation of £125, a £40 victim surcharge and costs of £85. He was barred from the Kings Club for 12 months.

Jevgenijs Ivanovs, 32, of Williamson Drive, Ripon, was given a 12-month community order for driving while under the influence of alcohol on Harrogate Road, Ripon. He was ordered to complete a Drink Impaired Drivers programme and to pay a victim surcharge of £85 and costs of £85. He was disqualified from driving for 45 months and until an extended test of competence has been passed.

Christopher Roy Adamson, 24, of Woodfield Avenue, Harrogate, was fined £220 for failing to stop after an accident on Chatsworth Grove when the Volvo S40 he was driving caused damage to a Peugeot 208. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and costs of £85, and eight points were added to his licence. No separate penalty was imposed for driving without due care and attention.

Steven Howe, 22, of Belmont Avenue, Teesville, Redcar and Cleveland, was fined £50 for acting as a pedlar without a certificate in Follifoot. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and costs of £85.

Eleanor Chalmers, 38, of Skipton Road, Harrogate, was ordered to pay compensation of £14.78 for stealing a bottle of vodka and a tub of gravy granules from Aldi on Oak Beck Road. Magistrates imposed costs of £85. No action was taken for carrying out a further offence while subject to conditional discharge for theft, and that order was to continue.

Callum John Edmondson, 21, of Pasture Crescent, Knaresborough, was ordered to pay costs of £40 for failing to comply with the community requirement of a suspended sentence. The terms were varied to 12 weeks imprisonment suspended for 24 months, and a 12-week curfew.

Zachari Nathaniel Pursglove, 27, of Church Drive, East Keswick, was fined £180 for using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of violence in The Ginnel, Harrogate, which the court found to be racially aggravated. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and costs of £85. No separate penalty was imposed for being drunk and disorderly.

He was ordered to complete 200 hours’ unpaid work and to pay a victim surcharge of £85 and costs of £85. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months and until an extended test of competence has been passed.

Joel William Schofield, 20, of Belmont Road, Harrogate, was given a six-month conditional discharge for damaging household and food items at Asda in Harrogate, with intent to destroy them. He must pay compensation of £12.80 and a £20 victim surcharge.
