Leeds man arrested in Harrogate after man injured during shooting incident outside Sikh Temple

Officers were called to the incident outside the Sikh temple on Chapeltown Road at 12.30pm on Good Friday, when a number of shots were fired in the road.

A number of vehicles were damaged and a man in his seventies was injured when his car collided with a suspect vehicle leaving the scene.

No-one else was found to be injured but a number of members of the public’s vehicles that had been passing the scene received bullet damage.

The latest arrest saw a 29-year-old Leeds man arrested in Harrogate yesterday.

It follows three further arrests earlier in the investigation.

The other men aged 25, 28 and 29, were released on police bail on Sunday.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Scott, of West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “The criminal use of firearms in our communities is something we will always treat extremely seriously, and we are continuing to conduct a detailed and comprehensive investigation into this incident.

“We are still appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information that could assist the investigation to contact us immediately.”

Describing the incident earlier in the investigation, Detective Inspector Phil Jackson, of Leeds District CID, said: “This is clearly a very serious incident where shots have been discharged in a busy street on a bank holiday afternoon when a number of members of the public were in the area.

“From initial accounts, we believe a man has got out of a car and fired a number of shots towards another vehicle before being driven away from the scene.

“Thankfully we have no reports of any casualties but clearly the consequences could easily have been much worse.

“We are conducting extensive enquiries to identify those responsible and to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident. We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information that could assist the investigation.

“We have recovered a number of vehicles we believe were involved in the incident and which have what appears to be bullet damage.

“Clearly an incident of this nature will cause understandable concern in the community and local officers will be conducting additional patrols of the area to reassure people.”
