It is believed that around 12pm today (July 26) a vehicle hit the Grade II listed piers on York Road, resident's have reported that the driver did not stop. Images sent to the Advertiser show hay and stone strewn across the side of the road.

Resident, Dave Embleton, says the damage is significant and could have been caused by a farm vehicle going at high speeds.

He said: "This is the main feature of the village and god knows how many years it has been there. It has only just happened in the last hour or so and there is straw everywhere, they must have hit it at a fair speed. Whoever did this doesn't appear to have even stopped.

"I am absolutely gutted, this is a listed building and part of the ambience of the village, there is no excuse for them to have demolished it and not attempted to tell someone what had happened."

He added: "The pillars are an incredibly important part of the village, they were one of the main reasons that the housing plans for the village were turned down earlier this year.

"This was also on the school side of the road. I am a bit worried what could have happened if there were school kids around when this happened."
