Gang of suspected BMW thieves caught after 110mph chase through North Yorkshire

A gang who fled police in a stolen BMW 3 Series have been arrested after a dramatic chase near Harrogate.

The pursuit took place on Monday night when police were informed that the stolen car was travelling through North Yorkshire in convoy with another BMW.

Officers spotted the stolen car on the A1 heading south just before 11pm, but it did not stop for police and the driver made off at high speed.

The chase reached speeds of up to 110mph and two police cars were damaged during it. A stinger device was deployed and the car was eventually stopped near Dishforth.

The second BMW was also sighted on the A1 shortly afterwards and stopped near Wetherby without incident.

Four men and a teenage boy have now been arrested.

The 19-year-old driver of the stolen car was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, drink driving, possession of cannabis, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of a knife.

The passengers, aged 20 and 16, were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and possession of a knife, and the 20-year-old for possession of cannabis.

The other BMW suspected of being involved in the incident contained two men aged 26 and 20 who were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to steal a motor vehicle.

The men have been released under investigation while enquiries into the incident continue.
