A FLIGHT instructor has appeared in court charged over a helicopter crash which killed a millionaire businessman and his wife in Harrogate.

Paul Spencer, 43, and his 59-year-old wife Linda were killed in January 2008 when the helicopter he was flying crashed in the grounds of Rudding Park Hotel.

Flight instructor Ian King, of Burns Way in Wetherby, appeared before magistrates in Harrogate on Monday, charged with using false documents in relation to obtaining a pilot’s licence.

He was granted unconditional bail until April 5 when he will appear at York Crown Court.

Mr and Mrs Spencer, from Brighouse, ran a hugely successful wholesale company, Country Baskets, selling artificial flowers and decorations

They were regular visitors to Rudding Park, where they owned a lodge, and had returned from a Caribbean holiday shortly before the crash.
