Former Mayor of Ripon, Andrew Williams, is facing jail after being found guilty of one charge of fraud at York Crown Court.

After just over three hours of deliberations, a jury at York Crown Court delivered a unanimous verdict of guilty this afternoon (Friday) to the charge of fraud.

The charge concerned allegations that Williams pocketed £220 of takings given to him by an ice cream vendor during the city’s Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012.

The court heard the money was commission from the vendor to the city council for his sales pitch on the day and should have been given to the city council’s town clerk for her to bank.

Postponing sentencing, Judge Guy Kearl said: “What you have done on any view is bring disgrace to the position that you have occupied.

“This abuse of your position and the gross breach of trust in office is likely to result in a prison sentence – you must understand that.”

Williams was bailed to reappear at Leeds Crown Court on August 5 for sentencing.
